Matthew Rowan (1979 - , Northern Ireland) began studying composition with Brian Irvine and Greg Caffrey at South Eastern Regional College on the ND in Popular Music course. He then moved to Newcastle upon Tyne and enrolled at Newcastle College where he completed an HND in Music Production under Martin McAloon (Prefab Sprout). The natural progression on to the BMus in Popular and Contemporary Music at Newcastle University placed him in the care of composers Agustín Fernández and Bennett Hogg (with much appreciated help from Martyn Harry and Matthew Sansom) who guided Matthew through a Master's degree, and then a PhD in Contemporary Composition which was examined by David Clarke and Peter Wiegold. Matthew is also a part-time lecturer at Newcastle University, and was music studies editor for the inaugural issue of e-pisteme, a postgraduate e-journal based in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Matthew has attended six masterclasses in guitar by world-renowned session ace Carl Verheyen, experienced a one-to-one lesson with him, and performed Carl's Dusk (Part 2) with the Carl Verheyen Band (many thanks to Annie & Ulidia Integrated College, and Carl, Dave & Walfredo!). "...We were all completely amazed at how well you played that song and how perfectly you captured the vibe and feeling..." (Carl Verheyen).
